ABOUT THE MEDIA CENTER

MEDIA CENTER STAFF

  • Mrs. Kandia Spain - Librarian/Media Specialist/Technology Coordinator (collection development, Media Center budget, staff development for the use of media, media skills, research/curriculum development, minor technology repairs, website)

  • Mrs.Martha Umhau- Aide

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Northern High School Media Center is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of information.  The media specialist provides individual guidance and formal instruction so that students learn to access, evaluate and apply information from a variety of sources.                         

HOURS

Monday - Thursday, 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Friday, 7:00 AM- 2:40 PM

GENERAL CIRCULATION POLICY

  • Regular collection and paperbacks -21 days (items may be renewed)

  • Reference or reserved books - Overnight/weekend and holidays-due before 1st period the following school day

  • Periodicals (back issues) - 14 days

  • Newspapers - Old issues, except county papers, are free

SERVICES

  • COPIER - There is a copy machine available for student use.  The cost to make copies is $.10 per page. 

  • PRINTER - Students may print documents while in the Media Center.  The cost to print is $.10 per page.  Please feel free to print, but make sure you save your work to a travel drive not to the computer hard drive.  Also, please preview all print jobs so you will know how many pages will print.  If you print it, you pay for it! We also have a color printer. The cost is $.25 a page.

  • COMPUTERS - The Media Center has thirty computer workstations for student use.  All workstations can be used to access the Internet (Netscape or on-line databases) or use Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.  You can also use the Destiny (On-line Card Catalog) to search for books by title, subject, author, keyword or call number.

  • STAFF - The media center staff is here to help you with all your research projects and other assignments.

Calvert County Public Library - Search their online catalog, reserve books, access databases or use "LearnATest" using your public library card.

LearnATest provides inactive exams based on official tests such as SAT, GED, and ASVAB, just to name a few.  Go to Cosmos and
